The Man Who Finally Came Back

Chapter 18 - The Man Who Finally Came Back

Victor Hale requested one meeting.

Claire refused.

Then Anne asked her to reconsider.

"Why?"

"Because I need to hear him say my name without pretending he owns the story."

They met in Marcus's office.

Victor looked older.

Not broken.

Just smaller without the rooms that once bent around him.

Anne sat across from him.

Claire beside her.

Victor looked at Anne.

"I'm sorry for what happened."

Anne shook her head.

"No."

Victor frowned.

"Excuse me?"

"That's not an apology."

He looked irritated.

A familiar expression.

Good.

Anne continued.

"Say what you did."

Victor stared at the table.

"I made decisions I believed were necessary."

Claire almost spoke.

Anne squeezed her hand.

Wait.

Victor continued.

"I moved money."

Anne waited.

"I lied about Claire."

Wait.

"I used your medical condition to control information."

Anne's eyes filled.

Victor looked up.

"And I was wrong."

The room remained quiet.

No one forgave him.

That was not what the meeting was for.

Anne stood.

"Thank you."

Victor seemed surprised.

"For what?"

"For finally saying it where I could hear."

She walked out.

Claire followed.

In the hallway, Anne began shaking.

Claire held her.

"Are you okay?"

"No."

Claire smiled sadly.

"Good answer."

Anne laughed through tears.

Behind them, Daniel waited near the elevator.

He had not entered the meeting.

Another lesson learned.

Claire walked toward him.

"How did it go?"

Anne answered.

"He told the truth."

Daniel raised his eyebrows.

"Did it fix anything?"

"No."

Anne pressed the elevator button.

"But it ended something."

The doors opened.

They stepped inside together.

Victor remained behind.

For years, he had been the most powerful person in every version of their story.

Now he was simply a man in a room they had chosen to leave.
