The Name Anne Never Said

Chapter 12 - The Name Anne Never Said
Claire had spent most of her life imagining a faceless man.
Sometimes he was cruel.
Sometimes frightened.
Sometimes dead.
In her kinder fantasies, he had been young and foolish and had regretted leaving.
Anne asked everyone except Claire to leave the room.
They sat together in Linda's tiny kitchen.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Anne said, "Your father was named Samuel Bennett."
Claire blinked.
"Your last name?"
"He was my husband."
Claire stared.
"You told me you were never married."
"I told you he left."
"Why?"
"Because I was ashamed."
Samuel Bennett had been an accountant at Hale Development.
He had discovered irregularities years before Claire was born.
He and Anne fell in love.
When Samuel threatened to report the fraud, Victor fired him.
Three months later, Samuel died in a highway accident.
Anne was pregnant.
Claire felt the room tilt.
"Victor caused it?"
"I don't know."
That answer mattered.
Anne did not turn suspicion into fact.
She continued.
"Thomas was Samuel's college roommate."
Claire finally understood the photograph.
Thomas had not been holding a secret child.
He had been holding his dead best friend's daughter.
"He promised Samuel that if anything happened, he would look after us."
Claire covered her mouth.
All those years.
The wrong question had nearly destroyed everything.
Not Who was Thomas to my mother?
But Who was Thomas to my father?
Anne began to cry.
"I should have told you."
"Why didn't you?"
"At first because Victor scared me. Later because I had spent so many years lying that the truth felt too large to carry."
Claire looked at her mother.
"You left me with the same silence."
"I know."
"I can understand what happened to you after the accident."
Anne nodded.
"But before that? All those years?"
"I was wrong."
No defense.
No excuse.
Just wrong.
Claire's anger softened.
Not disappeared.
Softened.
Anne reached across the table.
This time, Claire let her take her hand.
Outside, Daniel waited beside his car.
Claire walked to him.
He looked at her.
"Are we related?"
Despite everything, Claire laughed.
A real laugh.
"No."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Relief crossed his face.
But Claire raised one hand.
"That doesn't fix us."
"I know."
She studied him.
"Good."
Then Marcus Reed called.
Victor Hale had filed an emergency motion to block Anne from speaking publicly.

He claimed she was mentally incompetent.
And the hearing was in forty-eight hours.
