The Letter Evelyn Never Sent

Chapter 03 - The Letter Evelyn Never Sent

Claire did not open the envelope immediately.

That surprised everyone, including herself.

She sat on the edge of a narrow sofa while Daniel and Evelyn stood across the room. The envelope rested in her lap like something alive.

"My mother gave this to you?" Claire asked.

Evelyn nodded.

"Two days after that photograph was taken."

"And you kept it for thirty-two years."

"I was asked to."

"By my mother?"

"Yes."

Claire looked down at the handwriting.

Anne Bennett had been dead thirteen years. Claire had spent every one of those years wishing for one more conversation with her.

Now one had been sitting in Evelyn Mercer's possession.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Mom, why didn't you tell me this existed?"

"Because it wasn't yours."

"And apparently it wasn't Claire's either."

Evelyn looked at him sharply.

"Don't."

"No, I think we're past don't."

Claire broke the seal.

Inside was one page.

Not a confession.

Not an explanation.

A warning.

Claire read silently at first.

Then her eyes caught on one sentence.

She read it aloud.

"If Claire ever asks about Thomas, tell her only that he kept his promise, and that I am sorry I made silence the price of her safety."

Daniel stared at his mother.

"What promise?"

Evelyn sat down across from Claire.

"Your mother was in trouble."

"What kind?"

"Financial. Personal. Both."

"Who was she hiding from?"

Evelyn hesitated.

Claire folded the letter.

"No more protecting dead people's secrets."

Evelyn looked older in that moment.

"His name was Victor Hale."

Claire knew the name.

Everyone in Richmond did.

Victor Hale was a retired attorney, former state senator, and the smiling face on half the charity buildings in the county.

He was also scheduled to give a toast at the reception.

Claire stood.

"No."

Evelyn nodded once.

"Your mother worked for him when she was twenty-four."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"What did he do?"

"I don't know everything," Evelyn said. "Thomas never told me everything."

"But he helped her."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

"Because Anne came to our house one night carrying you in that yellow blanket. She said Victor had taken something from her that she could never get back."

Claire's pulse began to race.

"What?"

Evelyn met her eyes.

"Your future."

At that exact moment, someone knocked on the door.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

Warm. Polished. Familiar.

"Claire? It's Victor. I heard there was some confusion."
