The Bookkeeper

Chapter 11 - The Bookkeeper

Her name was Linda Carver.

She was seventy-four and lived alone above a florist in Fredericksburg.

For twenty-eight years, she had kept a locked file cabinet in her bedroom.

Inside were copies of wire transfers, trust documents, and handwritten notes.

Linda had been Victor Hale's bookkeeper.

"I told myself I kept these because I was afraid of him," she said.

Anne sat across from her.

"And were you?"

"Yes."

Linda looked at Claire.

"But fear becomes an excuse if you use it long enough."

Claire understood that sentence better than she wanted to.

Linda's records showed that Victor had diverted money from Anne's trust into one of his own companies.

Then, when Thomas threatened legal action, Victor transferred the property into a nonprofit structure designed to make the ownership trail look legitimate.

"Why didn't Thomas stop him?" Daniel asked.

Linda's eyes softened.

"Because Thomas died."

Daniel went still.

Thomas Mercer had suffered a fatal heart attack six weeks after Anne's accident.

Linda continued.

"After Thomas died, Victor came to me with papers he said had been signed before Thomas's death."

"Had they?" Claire asked.

"No."

Daniel stood and walked to the window.

His father had died believing he had failed.

Evelyn had spent thirty years believing Thomas had carried a secret relationship.

Claire had spent thirty years believing she had been abandoned.

Anne had spent thirteen years believing her daughter had rejected her.

Victor had not needed to invent one enormous lie.

He had only needed to give everyone a different small one.

Claire looked at Linda.

"Why contact us now?"

Linda glanced at the television.

A news report showed Victor leaving a charity luncheon.

"He said your mother was confused. Then I saw Anne on the news."

Linda's voice broke.

"And I realized I was the confused one."

She handed Claire a final envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a check made out to Thomas Mercer.

Memo: Settlement.

Thomas had written across the front in red ink.

RETURNED.

Underneath:

My silence is not for sale.

Daniel stared at his father's handwriting.

Then he sat down and covered his face.

Claire wanted to comfort him.

She almost did.

But before she could move, Linda spoke again.

"There is something else."

Claire turned.

Linda looked at Anne.

"Victor wasn't trying to hide only the money."

May you like

Anne's face changed.

Linda whispered, "He was hiding who Claire's father was."
