Mara’s Voice

Chapter 05 - Mara’s Voice
Evelyn drove to a roadside motel instead of returning to Boston.
She did not trust the penthouse, the estate, or any room owned by the Mercer family. She sat on the edge of a narrow bed beneath a buzzing lamp and pressed play on the old recorder.
Static filled the room.
Then Mara’s voice emerged.
“If you are hearing this, Malcolm has found the copies.”
She sounded younger than the woman in the photograph, but steady.
“He is using Mercer Community Housing to buy condemned properties through shell companies. The city pays to rehabilitate them. The money disappears, and families are moved into buildings that are not safe.”
Evelyn gripped the recorder.
“My husband says he can fix it from inside the company. I want to believe him. But Daniel still thinks his father has a line he will not cross.”
There was a pause, followed by the faint sound of a door closing.
“I found an account created in Evelyn Hart’s name.”
Evelyn nearly dropped the recorder.
The recording had been made years before she met Daniel.
Mara continued.
“I do not know who Evelyn Hart is. Maybe she is another employee. Maybe she is someone Malcolm plans to use. But the account is receiving money from the housing project.”
Evelyn rewound the tape and listened again.
Her maiden name.
An account in her name existed before she had ever met Daniel.
The sealed envelope contained photocopies of bank transfers and a single photograph of Evelyn at age nineteen, standing outside her college library.
Someone had written a question beneath it.
Why her?
Evelyn called Daniel.
He answered on the first ring.
“You knew my name before we met.”
Silence.
“Daniel.”
“I knew of you,” he admitted.
The motel room seemed to tilt.
“How?”
“My father chose you.”
Evelyn’s voice dropped. “For what?”
“To become the innocent signature on accounts he could control.”
She pressed a hand over her mouth.
Daniel continued quickly. “I met you because I wanted to warn you. Then I fell in love with you.”
“You expect that to make it better?”
“No.”
“Did Mara know?”
“She discovered the plan. That is why she disappeared.”
Evelyn looked down at the photograph of her younger self.
On the back was an address in Portland.
Before hanging up, Daniel said, “Please don’t go there alone.”
Evelyn stared at the address.
Then someone knocked on the motel door.
Three slow knocks.

A woman’s voice called from the hallway.
“My name is Mara.”
