The Safe-Deposit Box

Chapter 14 - The Safe-Deposit Box

The safe-deposit box contained twenty-seven cashier’s checks.

Each one was made out to a family displaced by Mercer Community Housing. The total exceeded four million dollars.

Daniel had liquidated his personal investment accounts before submitting his confession.

There was also a letter.

Evelyn,

This money is not forgiveness, and it is not proof that I have changed. It is only money that should never have been mine.

I will not ask you to visit. I will not ask you to wait. I will answer every question investigators ask, even when the answer destroys what remains of my life.

You once told me love is not the same as rescue. I understand that now.

Daniel

Evelyn folded the letter and gave the checks to Grace Holloway.

Grace formed a restitution trust before noon.

For the next two weeks, Evelyn worked with tenants, attorneys, and federal investigators. She did not speak publicly about her marriage. She refused interview requests and ignored headlines calling her “the betrayed wife who brought down a dynasty.”

She was not interested in being a symbol.

She wanted the heating repaired in Building Four.

Mara became the lead witness. Her testimony connected Victoria to the shell companies and proved that Daniel’s payments had continued the scheme, even if he claimed he intended to unwind it.

The board scheduled an emergency meeting to remove Victoria permanently and decide whether to dissolve Mercer Holdings.

Hours before the meeting, the power went out in Thomas’s townhouse.

His security alarm failed.

Someone entered through the back door and stole the original memory card.

Thomas was found unconscious on the kitchen floor, alive but badly shaken.

The police believed the intruder wanted the last surviving copy of Richard Hart’s evidence.

Evelyn still had encrypted duplicates, but only the original contained metadata proving when the files were created.

Without it, Victoria’s lawyers could claim the evidence had been altered.

That night, Mara called Evelyn.

“I know who took it,” she said.

“Victoria?”

“No.”

Mara’s voice broke.

“Daniel.”
