The House in Connecticut

Chapter 04 - The House in Connecticut

The Mercer estate sat behind iron gates and two miles of bare winter trees.

Evelyn had spent holidays there, smiling through dinners beneath portraits of men who had named buildings after themselves. She had always felt watched in that house, but she had mistaken discomfort for insecurity.

Now she understood the walls had been keeping secrets.

The caretaker, Mr. Lewis, recognized her car and opened the gate without question. He was seventy, quiet, and loyal to the family in the old-fashioned way that often meant loyalty to the truth rather than to the people who paid him.

“Mrs. Mercer,” he said, “I wondered when you would come.”

Evelyn held up the brass key. “Did Daniel call you?”

“No.”

“Then how did you know?”

Mr. Lewis looked toward the second-floor windows. “Because Mrs. Mercer came an hour ago.”

Victoria’s black sedan was hidden behind the garage.

Evelyn entered through the kitchen and climbed the back staircase. Malcolm’s study was at the end of a dark corridor, its door partly open.

Inside, Victoria stood before the fireplace feeding documents into the flames.

Evelyn ran forward and pulled the metal screen shut.

Victoria turned calmly. “You have no idea what those papers can do.”

“They can tell me what your family did.”

“They can ruin thousands of employees who had nothing to do with Malcolm’s mistakes.”

“Mistakes?”

Victoria’s eyes hardened. “Do not confuse business with morality. The world is not arranged for your comfort.”

Evelyn used the brass key to unlock the bottom drawer of Malcolm’s desk. It was empty except for a small cassette recorder and a sealed envelope bearing Mara’s handwriting.

Victoria moved toward her.

Mr. Lewis appeared in the doorway.

“That belongs to Mrs. Mercer,” he said.

Victoria looked at him with disbelief. “I am Mrs. Mercer.”

Mr. Lewis shook his head. “Not the one Mr. Malcolm was afraid of.”

Evelyn took the envelope and recorder.

As she turned to leave, Victoria spoke softly.

“Mara did not disappear because Malcolm threatened her.”

Evelyn stopped.

Victoria’s next words followed her into the hallway.

“She disappeared because Daniel asked her to.”
