The Boardroom Without a Throne

Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Without a Throne
The emergency board meeting drew reporters, city officials, tenant representatives, and federal observers.
Victoria entered the room as though she still owned every person inside it.
Evelyn sat beside Grace Holloway. Mara sat on her other side. Daniel’s chair at the head of the table remained empty.
The board counsel read the charges: fraud, obstruction, misuse of pension funds, falsified inspections, witness intimidation, and conspiracy.
Victoria listened without expression.
When asked to respond, she stood.
“Mercer Holdings built homes, schools, hospitals, and jobs,” she said. “This company should not be dismantled because a handful of people resent the cost of progress.”
A tenant named Mrs. Alvarez rose from the back row.
“My grandson slept in a coat because your building had no heat.”
Victoria did not look at her.
Evelyn placed her father’s memory card on the table.
“My father believed truth would be enough,” she said. “It was not, because people with power kept deciding who deserved to hear it.”
She played selected portions of Richard’s statement, Mara’s recording, and Anne’s confession.
Then Daniel entered with a federal marshal.
He had agreed to testify in exchange for no promise of leniency.
Victoria finally lost her composure.
“You would destroy your family for strangers?”
Daniel looked toward Mrs. Alvarez.
“They were never strangers. We just built offices high enough not to see them.”
He described the shell companies, the forged accounts, and every payment he signed. He did not minimize his role.
The board voted to remove Victoria unanimously.
Mercer Holdings was placed under court supervision. Its luxury development division would be sold, and the proceeds would fund repairs, restitution, and employee pensions.
As reporters crowded the hallway, Victoria passed Evelyn.
“You will regret tearing down the life you married into.”
Evelyn met her gaze.
“I regret believing it was a life.”
Victoria was arrested that evening on charges of obstruction and financial conspiracy.
Daniel was taken into custody after his testimony.
Before the marshal led him away, he asked Evelyn one question.
“Did the restitution trust reach Building Four?”
“Yes.”
For the first time in weeks, he smiled.
Then he disappeared behind the courthouse doors.
Evelyn stood beside Mara beneath the cold city lights.

She had won the truth.
She had no idea what to do with the love that remained.
