The House Without Secrets

Chapter 18 - The House Without Secrets

Daniel returned to Boston eighteen months later with one suitcase and no driver waiting.

He rented a small apartment above a bakery in Somerville and began working for a nonprofit that renovated unsafe housing. He was not allowed to handle finances. He carried lumber, filed permit requests, and listened when tenants spoke.

He did not contact Evelyn.

That choice unsettled her more than a letter would have.

Three months passed before they saw each other at the opening of the Hart Community Center.

The building was filled with children, folding chairs, legal-aid tables, and photographs of families returning to repaired homes. Near the entrance stood a silver frame containing Richard Hart’s portrait.

Daniel arrived quietly and remained near the back.

Evelyn noticed that he wore the same black suit from the penthouse party, now altered to fit his thinner frame. He looked older, but less guarded.

After the speeches, he approached her.

“The center is beautiful,” he said.

“It is useful.”

He smiled slightly. “Your father would have preferred that word.”

Daniel handed her the restored blue music box.

“I repaired the mechanism. The woodworker in the prison shop helped.”

Evelyn turned the key.

“Moon River” played softly.

For a moment, neither spoke.

“I am not asking you to forgive me,” Daniel said.

“I have forgiven parts of you.”

He waited.

“The frightened boy who tried to help my father,” she continued. “The man who finally testified. I have not forgiven the husband who decided I could not survive the truth.”

“That is fair.”

“Fair is not the same as easy.”

“No.”

Mara approached with two cups of coffee, saw them, and quietly turned away.

Evelyn looked at Daniel. “There is an apartment above the center that needs repairs.”

“I heard.”

“The contractor quit.”

“I also heard.”

“You may submit a bid like everyone else.”

Daniel nodded. “No special treatment.”

“None.”

As he walked away, Evelyn called after him.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

“Do not lie on the application.”

His laugh was soft and surprised.

It was the first sound between them that did not hurt.
