The Arrest That Never Happened

Chapter 11 - The Arrest That Never Happened
The man in the inspector’s jacket was not a police officer.
Thomas recognized him as a private investigator who had worked for Mercer Holdings for more than a decade.
Victoria expected fear. Instead, Thomas laughed.
“You forged the seal,” he said.
The smile left her face.
He held up his phone. “And you announced it while I was recording.”
Victoria’s investigator moved toward him, but Mara stepped between them.
“Touch him,” she said, “and the real police receive everything.”
Victoria looked at Mara with open contempt. “You had six years to destroy this family. You did nothing.”
“I was afraid.”
“And now?”
Mara glanced at Evelyn. “Now I am ashamed of what fear cost someone else.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Mr. Lewis had followed them from Connecticut and called the police when he saw Victoria’s car outside the house.
Victoria closed the leather folder. “You think a memory card will save you? Half those buildings have changed owners. The witnesses are gone. The city signed every approval.”
Evelyn wiped her tears and stood.
“My father’s testimony names the inspectors.”
“Dead men are poor witnesses.”
“Living women are better.”
Victoria’s attention shifted to Mara.
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
The police arrived minutes later. No one was arrested immediately, but the memory card was copied, statements were taken, and Victoria’s forged court order was seized.
Daniel was released from custody by noon after the company withdrew the stolen-car complaint.
He found Evelyn outside the police station.
She handed him a copy of her father’s recording.
“You knew my father investigated your family.”
Daniel looked at the drive in his palm. “Yes.”
“How long?”
“Before our first date.”
The final excuse inside her collapsed.
He moved closer, but she stepped back.
“I did love you,” he said.
“You loved me after entering my life under false pretenses.”
“Yes.”
“That does not erase the reason you came.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment. “I want you to testify against your mother.”
Daniel’s face hardened with pain, not surprise.
“She will lose everything.”
“So did Mara. So did my father. So did the families in those buildings.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I will testify.”
Evelyn expected relief.
Instead, he added, “But there is something on your father’s recording you have not heard.”
“What?”
“The final minute.”
She pressed play.

Her father’s voice returned.
“Daniel Mercer helped me copy the files.”
