The Photograph He Tried to Bury

Chapter 01 - The Photograph He Tried to Bury

## chapter 01 - The Flame Beneath the Chandelier

The party had been planned to celebrate Daniel Mercer’s promotion to chairman of Mercer Holdings. Every detail in the penthouse had been chosen to project certainty: the crystal chandelier, the silver trays, the string quartet near the windows, and the city glittering forty floors below.

Evelyn Mercer stood in the center of it all with a photograph burning between her fingers.

The flame was small, no larger than a candle, but it silenced the room faster than a gunshot. Guests turned from their champagne. Daniel stopped three steps behind her, his face losing color as he recognized the woman in the picture.

“You said this photo was destroyed,” Evelyn whispered.

Daniel’s voice came low and controlled. “Evelyn… put it down.”

The photograph showed a beautiful dark-haired woman standing beside a lake. On the back was a handwritten date.

The date was six weeks after Evelyn and Daniel’s wedding.

Evelyn looked at him through tear-streaked makeup. “She was alive when you married me.”

A murmur moved through the room. Daniel glanced toward the guests, then back at his wife.

“You don’t know the whole story.”

Evelyn let the photograph fall into a silver champagne bucket. The flame died with a hiss.

“Then tell everyone the part you buried.”

Daniel did not answer.

A woman near the windows lowered her phone, but not before Evelyn noticed the red recording light. By morning, the clip would be everywhere.

Daniel stepped closer. “Not here.”

Evelyn stared at him. “You had three years to choose where.”

Then a folded note slipped from the burned photograph and landed on the floor.

Daniel saw it first.

His fear was no longer hidden.

Evelyn picked up the note and read the first line.

If Daniel ever tells you I am dead, do not believe him.
