Three Weeks Before the Wedding

Chapter 03 - Three Weeks Before the Wedding

Daniel had not looked frightened on their wedding day.

He had stood beneath white roses in a chapel outside Newport, smiling as Evelyn walked toward him. His hands had been steady. His vows had sounded certain.

Now he told her that three weeks before that day, his mother had shown him proof that Mara was alive.

“A photograph?” Evelyn asked.

“A video.”

Daniel’s father, Malcolm Mercer, had been alive then. He had built Mercer Holdings from a regional construction firm into a national real-estate empire. He was respected in business magazines, feared in boardrooms, and almost worshiped by his family.

According to Daniel, Malcolm had shown him a video of Mara leaving a medical clinic in Oregon.

“She was using another name,” Daniel said. “My father said she had stolen company records and disappeared after threatening to expose him.”

“What records?”

“I never saw them.”

Evelyn laughed once, without humor. “Of course you didn’t.”

Daniel accepted the blow.

“He said if I contacted her, he would make sure you were caught in the investigation. He had already moved money through an account in your name.”

Evelyn went still.

“What account?”

“A charitable trust you signed papers for during the engagement.”

She remembered the documents. Daniel had told her they were for a family arts foundation. She had signed them in his office while a florist measured the windows for wedding arrangements.

“You used my signature.”

“My father did.”

“And you knew?”

“Not until later.”

Evelyn turned away because looking at him made it harder to breathe.

Daniel crossed the room but stopped before touching her. “I thought I could protect you by going through with the wedding and staying quiet.”

“You protected yourself from losing me.”

He closed his eyes.

That was answer enough.

Evelyn packed a small suitcase before dawn. Daniel stood in the bedroom doorway, saying nothing as she removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the dresser.

“I am not leaving because Mara was alive,” she said. “I am leaving because you knew and let me build a life on top of her grave.”

At the elevator, Daniel handed her an old brass key.

“What is this?”

“My father’s study in the house in Connecticut.”

“Why give it to me now?”

“Because Mara’s original files may still be there.”

The elevator doors began to close.

Daniel’s last words reached her through the narrowing gap.

“And because my mother will try to get there before you do.”
