The Woman Who Touched the Cart

Chapter 02 - The Woman Who Touched the Cart
Emma looked past Julian toward the crowd.
Near the champagne tower stood Claire Sutton, the hotel’s new events director. Perfect blond hair. Silver gown. A smile that never reached her eyes.
Thirty minutes earlier, Claire had rolled the cart from the service corridor herself.
That was strange enough. Directors did not move banquet carts.
Emma had asked if she needed help.
Claire had snapped, “Just do your job.”
Now Claire stood perfectly still.
Emma swallowed.
“Ms. Sutton moved it.”
Every face turned.
Claire laughed softly. “Of course I moved it. It was blocking the service entrance.”
Julian looked at her.
“Why?”
“I just told you.”
“No. Why was the events director moving a service cart during the largest fundraiser of the year?”
Claire’s smile weakened.
Victoria stepped forward. “This is ridiculous. My bracelet is missing, and the waitress was standing beside me.”
“Server,” Emma said before she could stop herself.
Victoria looked at her.
Emma’s voice shook, but she did not lower her eyes.
“I’m a banquet server.”
A silence followed.
For the first time that night, Julian almost smiled.
Then Claire pointed toward Emma’s apron.
“Search her and end this.”
Julian’s expression changed.
“No one touches her.”
Security chief Marcus Dale approached from the edge of the ballroom. Julian quietly asked him to check the service corridor cameras.
Claire’s face tightened for less than a second.
Emma noticed.
So did Julian.
Victoria noticed something else.
“You’re taking her side?”
“I’m taking the side of facts.”
“That bracelet belonged to my mother.”
“And accusing an employee in front of five hundred people without evidence belongs to no one.”
A murmur spread through the guests.
Victoria’s cheeks burned.
Five minutes later, Marcus returned.
“The camera covering the service entrance went offline at 7:42.”
Claire immediately said, “Technical issue.”
Marcus shook his head.
“It was manually disabled.”
Julian looked at Claire.
Emma felt the room tilt.
Someone had planned this.
Then Marcus added something even worse.
“The person who disabled it used an executive access card.”
Only six people in the building had one.
Claire had one.
May you like
Julian had one.
And so did Victoria.
