A Father Learning to Be Late

Chapter 18 - A Father Learning to Be Late
Julian made mistakes.
A lot of them.
He bought Emma a car without asking.
She made him return it.
He tried to send a private nurse to Laura’s apartment.
Laura sent the nurse home with cookies.
He once introduced Emma at a dinner as “my daughter” before asking whether she was comfortable with that.
Emma did not speak to him for two days.
He apologized.
No excuses.
Slowly, they learned each other.
Julian learned Emma hated olives.
Emma learned Julian could not cook anything except pancakes.
Julian learned she called her mother every night, even when they lived in the same apartment.
Emma learned he still kept the original letter in his desk.
One Sunday, they walked through the old service corridor of the hotel.
“This is where I worked when I met your mother,” he said.
Emma smiled.
“She says you dropped an entire tray of soup the first day.”
“She promised never to tell anyone.”
“She told everyone.”
They laughed.
Then Julian became serious.
“I know I can’t get those years back.”
“No.”
“I keep thinking I should make up for them.”
“You can’t.”
He nodded.
Emma looked at him.
“But you can be here for the next ones.”
His eyes filled.
He looked away.
Emma hugged him first.
It was brief.
Awkward.
Perfect.

Neither of them called it a beginning.
