She Was Humiliated Beside the Golden Cart—Then the Man in Black Asked One Question That Silenced the Ballroom

Chapter 01 - She Was Humiliated Beside the Golden Cart—Then the Man in Black Asked One Question That Silenced the Ballroom

## chapter 01 - The Girl Beside the Golden Cart

The ballroom of the Halston Grand glittered like a place where nothing ugly was supposed to happen. Crystal chandeliers burned above five hundred guests in black gowns and tuxedos. A string quartet played near the marble staircase. Champagne moved through the room on polished trays.

And beside a gold serving cart, twenty-three-year-old Emma Reed was trying not to cry.

Her beige banquet uniform suddenly felt too small, too cheap, too visible. Her fingers gripped the brass rail of the cart while Victoria Lang, one of the evening’s most powerful donors, stood inches away in a fitted black gown and enormous gold earrings.

“My bracelet was on my wrist ten minutes ago,” Victoria said loudly enough for the nearest guests to hear. “You were the only person who came near me.”

Emma’s face drained of color.

“I brought your water, ma’am. That’s all.”

Victoria’s mouth tightened.

“Then you won’t mind emptying your pockets.”

A few heads turned. Then more.

Emma looked around the room and realized that the humiliation was spreading faster than fire. People who had ignored her all evening were suddenly watching her like she was the entertainment.

“I didn’t take anything,” she whispered.

Victoria reached toward the cart.

“Security should search her.”

Emma’s breath caught. She had worked double shifts for six months to keep her mother’s apartment from being taken. She had never stolen so much as a dinner roll from the hotel kitchen.

Then the crowd behind Victoria shifted.

A tall man in a black suit walked toward them.

Julian Mercer.

Owner of the Halston Grand.

The man whose name appeared on every invitation, every donation plaque, every business magazine stacked in the lobby.

He stopped beside the cart and looked first at Victoria, then at Emma.

Emma expected him to call security.

Instead, his eyes settled on her trembling hands.

“Before anyone searches this woman,” Julian said quietly, “I want someone to answer one question.”

The ballroom seemed to lose its sound.

Victoria folded her arms. “Julian, this is simple.”

“No,” he said.

His gaze moved to the gold cart.

“Who moved this cart after Victoria arrived?”

Emma stared at him.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who had moved it.

And that person was still standing in the ballroom.
