The Night of the Transplant

Chapter 14 - The Night of the Transplant

The surgery lasted seven hours.

Emma paced until her legs hurt.

Julian sat beside her.

He did not tell her everything would be fine.

He did not make promises he could not keep.

He simply stayed.

At three in the morning, Victoria arrived.

Emma looked surprised.

“I won’t come closer,” Victoria said. “I just wanted you to know people from the hotel are downstairs.”

“Who?”

“The banquet staff.”

Emma blinked.

“All of them?”

“Almost.”

The cooks.

Servers.

Dishwashers.

Bartenders.

People who had worked beside Emma long before anyone knew her father’s name.

They were waiting because Laura had sometimes brought them food during late shifts.

Because Emma had covered their schedules.

Because ordinary people remembered ordinary kindness.

Emma began to cry.

Not the helpless tears from the ballroom.

Different tears.

The surgeon finally appeared.

“The transplant went well.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Julian closed his eyes.

Laura was not safe yet.

There would be recovery.

Rejection risks.

Long months.

But she had survived the operation.

Emma walked downstairs to tell the staff.

They cheered so loudly security had to remind them they were in a hospital.

Someone handed Emma a paper cup of terrible coffee.

She laughed.

Julian watched her surrounded by people who loved her without needing proof of who she was.

He understood something then.

Emma had not entered his life empty-handed.

May you like

She had brought an entire life with her.

And he would have to earn a place in it.
