The One Thing Money Could Not Fix

Chapter 13 - The One Thing Money Could Not Fix

Richard resigned within forty-eight hours.

The board froze his authority.

News outlets celebrated Emma as the young woman who brought down a dynasty.

She hated that too.

Because none of it changed Laura’s heart.

Her condition worsened.

Doctors told Emma the truth gently.

There might be weeks.

Maybe days.

Julian sat with Laura one evening while Emma slept in a chair.

For the first time in twenty-four years, they were alone.

“I waited for you,” Julian said.

Laura smiled faintly.

“I know.”

“No. I mean I really waited.”

“I know.”

“I hated you for leaving.”

“I know that too.”

He looked down.

“Why didn’t you come back after my father died?”

Laura’s eyes filled.

“By then Emma was twelve. You were famous. Richard was married. I was afraid the truth would turn her into a headline.”

Julian looked toward his sleeping daughter.

“It did.”

“Yes.”

“And she survived.”

Laura smiled.

“She always does.”

Julian took her hand.

“I wish I could fix this.”

Laura squeezed his fingers.

“You rich people always think the saddest thing in the world is finding something money can’t fix.”

He laughed through tears.

“What should I do?”

“Stay.”

So he stayed.

Emma woke at dawn and found them asleep, still holding hands.

For the first time since the gala, something inside her softened.

Later that morning, the cardiologist entered with unexpected news.

A donor heart had become available.

Laura was a possible match.

But there was a complication.

Her insurance had previously denied part of the transplant evaluation.

Julian stood immediately.

“I’ll pay.”

Emma looked at him.

He stopped.

He remembered.

This was not about taking control.

Laura smiled at her daughter.

Emma nodded.

“Help us.”

May you like

Julian made the call.

And for the first time, Emma allowed herself to hope.
