Richard's Last Move

Chapter 17 - Richard's Last Move

Three months after the gala, Richard was indicted on financial crimes related to the foundation.

But before trial, he made one last attempt to destroy Emma.

A private investigator leaked Laura’s old medical records and suggested she had lied about the timeline of Emma’s conception.

Tabloids returned.

WHO IS EMMA REED'S REAL FATHER?

The DNA test should have ended the question.

It did not matter.

Truth had become entertainment.

Emma wanted to disappear.

Then Laura, recovering slowly from transplant surgery, asked for her phone.

“What are you doing?”

“Something I should have done twenty-four years ago.”

Laura recorded a video.

Not polished.

No makeup.

No lawyer.

She told the story herself.

She spoke about being nineteen.

About Richard.

About Julian.

About fear.

About shame.

About raising Emma alone.

Then she said:

“My daughter is not responsible for the mistakes grown men made before she was born. She is not a scandal. She is not an inheritance. She is my child. And if you need to know anything else about her, know this: she was kind before anyone knew she was rich.”

The video spread worldwide.

But something unexpected happened.

People stopped asking who Emma’s father was.

They started asking why women like Laura had spent generations carrying powerful families’ secrets alone.

Richard’s final attack collapsed.

Even worse for him, the leak of protected medical records created a new criminal investigation.

Emma visited him once before trial.

He sat behind glass.

“You came to gloat?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Emma looked at him.

“To tell you I’m done being angry every day.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“That sounds like forgiveness.”

“It isn’t.”

She stood.

May you like

“It’s freedom.”

And she walked away.
