The Woman in the Black Dress

Chapter 19 - The Woman in the Black Dress

One year after the gala, Victoria invited Emma to the opening of the Hospitality Justice Center.

Emma had eventually agreed to chair its employee advisory board.

The center provided free legal consultations, emergency support, and mediation for hospitality workers.

On opening night, Victoria wore a simple black dress.

No diamonds.

Emma noticed.

“You changed your earrings,” she said.

Victoria touched one ear and smiled.

“I thought I’d try being less recognizable.”

Emma almost laughed.

The two women stood together near a gold service cart used for champagne.

The symbolism was not lost on either of them.

Victoria became serious.

“I never properly apologized.”

“You apologized.”

“No. I explained.”

Emma looked at her.

Victoria took a breath.

“I saw your uniform and decided your dignity was cheaper than my reputation. That was what I did.”

Emma said nothing.

“I am sorry.”

This time, Emma believed her.

“I forgive you.”

Victoria’s eyes widened.

Emma continued.

“But I won’t forget.”

“You shouldn’t.”

Across the room, Claire Sutton stood near the entrance.

After cooperating with investigators, she had avoided prison but lost her career.

She had asked to attend.

Emma had said yes.

Claire approached nervously.

“I don’t expect—”

Emma stopped her.

“I know.”

Claire swallowed.

“I’m working at a community center now.”

“Good.”

“I think about that night all the time.”

“So do I.”

Claire nodded.

There was no hug.

No easy redemption.

Just three women standing near the same kind of golden cart where cruelty had once been made public.

This time, no one was being accused.

No one was being searched.

No one was being reduced to a uniform.

Sometimes, Emma thought, a happy ending was not the absence of scars.

It was deciding what the scars would build.
