Emma Returns to the Ballroom

Chapter 15 - Emma Returns to the Ballroom

Six weeks later, Emma returned to the Halston Grand.

Not as an heiress.

Not as a board member.

As a banquet server.

Her coworkers thought she was joking.

Julian did not.

“You said you wanted your job back.”

“I did.”

“So it’s yours.”

The first event she worked was a teachers’ charity dinner.

Smaller than the gala.

Warmer.

Less glitter.

Emma wore the same beige uniform.

She stood beside another gold service cart.

For a moment, the memory hit her so hard she could not move.

The chandeliers.

The staring faces.

Victoria’s voice.

Empty your pockets.

Then another server, Rosa, touched her shoulder.

“You okay?”

Emma breathed.

“Yeah.”

Across the ballroom, Julian stood speaking with guests.

He saw her.

He did not rush over.

He did not rescue her.

He simply nodded.

Emma nodded back.

That was enough.

Later, a young dishwasher accidentally broke a tray of glasses.

The room turned.

The boy looked terrified.

Emma walked over.

“Nobody died,” she said.

He stared at her.

She handed him a broom.

“Come on. I’ll help.”

At the edge of the room, Victoria watched.

After the event, she approached Emma.

“I started a worker protection fund.”

Emma’s expression cooled.

Victoria continued quickly.

“Independent oversight. Legal support for hotel and hospitality employees facing workplace accusations.”

Emma studied her.

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because I want you to run it.”

Emma laughed.

“No.”

Victoria nodded.

“I expected that.”

Emma walked away.

Then stopped.

“Send me the proposal.”

Victoria smiled for the first time.

Emma pointed a finger.

“That is not a yes.”

“I know.”

May you like

But maybe, Emma thought, not every second chance had to begin with forgiveness.

Sometimes it began with accountability.
