The Arrival of the Law

Chapter 07 - The Arrival of the Law

The sharp, echoing siren of a lead police cruiser cut through the mountain air as the local Chief of Police personally stepped onto the upper terrace, flanked by four armed deputies with their hands resting on their holsters.

The Chief marched past the stunned guests, stopping in front of David and bowing his head slightly in professional respect. "Mr. Vance, my department received the direct video feed and emergency alert from your security control room. Is Mrs. Vance alright?"

"She is being stabilized by our medical team, Chief," David said, his posture softening slightly as he looked down at Sarah, who gave him a reassuring nod from the medical gurney. The head paramedic confirmed that the baby’s heart rate was strong, steady, and completely out of danger.

The Police Chief turned his head slowly toward Evelyn, who was still sobbing uncontrollably on the ground, her red silk dress ruined, soaked in pool water and mud.

"Evelyn Reed," the Chief declared, pulling out a pair of heavy, polished steel handcuffs. "You are officially under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault on a pregnant mother, and reckless endangerment."

The cold metal cuffs clicked shut with two loud, sharp snaps around her wrists.

As the deputies pulled her up to her feet, Evelyn looked around desperately at the crowd of wealthy executives—people whose favor she had courted for years. Every single one of them turned their backs on her, looking away in silent, unanimous disgust.
