The Shadow Over the Villa

Chapter 01 - The Shadow Over the Villa

Chapter 01 - Beneath the Sapphire Water

The late afternoon sun glistened brilliantly across the sapphire pool of the exclusive hilltop villa, casting rippling golden reflections onto the white Italian marble terrace. Laughter, smooth jazz music from a live quartet, and the delicate clinking of expensive crystal champagne flutes filled the warm summer air as dozens of high-society guests gathered for the annual summer investment gala.

In the center of the crowd stood Sarah, eight months pregnant, wearing an elegant white linen maternity dress that flowed gracefully to her ankles. She smiled warmly, her soft hand resting protectively over her swollen belly as she chatted with a group of local real estate developers. Despite her modest demeanor, Sarah possessed a natural, magnetic grace that drew people toward her.

Standing near the edge of the stone terrace, holding a glass of dark red wine, was Evelyn. Dressed in a striking crimson silk gown that mirrored her sharp ambition, her eyes were fixed on Sarah with a cold, simmering malice. For five years, Evelyn had fought ruthlessly to secure the top managing director seat at the state’s premier private equity group. She had sacrificed her personal life, sabotaged her rivals, and bribed executives. Yet, over the past few months, Sarah’s growing influence—along with her quiet, mysterious presence at these elite gatherings—threatened to overshadow everything Evelyn had built.

As Sarah turned to walk toward the shaded lounge area near the deep end of the pool to grab a glass of sparkling water, Evelyn saw her moment. She glided smoothly into Sarah’s path, blocking her way with an artificial, practiced smile.

"Let me help you with your glass, Sarah," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with fake warmth as she reached out. "You really shouldn't be walking near the water in your condition."

Sarah stopped, sensing the sudden, sharp tension in Evelyn’s eyes. "Thank you, Evelyn, but I'm fine—"

Before Sarah could finish her sentence, Evelyn stepped in close, using her body to block the line of sight from the main lounge. With a sudden, violent thrust of both hands masked by the movement of her silk dress, Evelyn shoved Sarah backward off the polished ledge.

SPLASH!

The heavy water closed over Sarah’s head instantly with a deafening roar. The heavy weight of her soaked linen dress and her pregnant body pulled her down fast into the freezing ten-foot depth. Panicked and disoriented, Sarah gasped under water, swallowing mouthfuls of pool water as her arms flailed helplessly beneath the surface. Above her, the sunlight distorted into chaotic blue ripples as she fought to push herself back toward the air, her lungs burning with agony.
