The Collapse of an Empire

Chapter 06 - The Collapse of an Empire
"You made it personal the very second you put your hands on my wife and child," David said, his voice entirely devoid of pity as he held Sarah close. Nearby, the villa’s private medical team, having arrived via helicopter on the upper lawn, began carefully monitoring Sarah’s vital signs and checking the unborn baby's heartbeat.
"Check her firm's financial standing," David commanded, looking over at his Chief Financial Officer, who was standing beside Sterling.
The CFO tapped rapidly on his encrypted tablet. "Evelyn Reed’s investment firm currently holds three massive development loans with our commercial banking division, Mr. Vance. Totaling forty-five million dollars, with a default clause tied to personal ethical conduct."
"Recall every single loan immediately," David ordered without a fraction of a second's hesitation. "Call in all corporate debts. Cancel every lease, contract, and vendor agreement associated with her name or her family's holdings by 5:00 PM today."
"Consider it executed, sir," the CFO replied, already dialing the head of credit risk.
Evelyn collapsed completely, dropping onto her knees over the wet, dirty tiles. She reached out desperately, trying to grab the wet hem of David’s trousers. "Please! Mr. Vance, I beg you, have mercy! My family’s firm will be forced into bankruptcy by tomorrow morning! Everything I’ve built my entire life will be seized!"

David didn't even bother to look down at her groveling figure. He stepped backward, allowing two armed security guards to move in and block her path.
"You believed power was a game you played to bully people at cocktail parties, Evelyn," David whispered, his dark eyes staring through her soul. "Now you're going to learn what real power does when it protects its family."
