Chapter 03 - The Sentence That Froze the Air

"She's lying!" Lily screamed, sprinting across the wet deck and throwing her tiny arms tightly around her soaked father’s neck. "She pushed her! Dad, the lady in the red dress shoved Mom on purpose!"

Evelyn’s forced smile flickered for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of dark anger, but she quickly smoothed down her red silk dress and sighed softly. "Sweetheart, you’re just confused and traumatized by what happened. Why on earth would I do something so horrible to your mother?"

David slowly stood up.

Water dripped heavily from his ruined bespoke suit, forming dark puddles around his Italian leather shoes. His physical body was completely motionless, but his posture transformed instantly. He didn't shout. He didn't curse. But the look in his dark eyes went entirely dead—as flat, lethal, and unforgiving as sheet ice.

He turned his body, stepping past the paramedics who were just beginning to run from the main house, and locked his eyes directly onto Evelyn. He took a single, deliberate step toward her.

"Evelyn," David said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a strange, vibrating frequency that silenced every single whisper, music note, and breath across the entire pool deck. "You just ended your life as you know it."

Every single drop of color drained from Evelyn’s face in an instant. The terrifying, absolute certainty in his quiet tone hit her chest like a heavy sledgehammer. She opened her mouth to scoff, to mock his dramatic statement, but the words withered and died in her throat.
