The Storage Locker

Chapter 07 - The Storage Locker
Emily did not go alone.
She told the sender she would.
Then she went with Ryan, Mark, and a detective who had finally arrived to take over the case.
Vivian was ordered to remain at the hotel while the police reviewed the cake sabotage.
She hated that.
Emily could tell.
At the old Caldwell office, the brass key opened a storage locker in the basement.
Inside were twelve banker boxes.
Every box was labeled with a year.
The oldest dated back nineteen years.
Ryan lifted the lid from the first one.
Foundation statements.
Property ledgers.
Donor records.
At first, nothing looked unusual.
Then Emily found a folder marked PRIVATE—D.C.
David Caldwell.
Ryan's father.
Inside was a letter written six months before his death.
Ryan read it aloud.
If anything happens to me before the independent audit is complete, do not let Miles Bennett control the foundation records.
Ryan stopped.
His hands began to shake.
Emily took the page from him.
The next paragraph was worse.
David believed money was being diverted from the foundation through shell companies.
He suspected Miles.
And he believed someone inside the family was protecting him.
Ryan leaned against the wall.
"My father knew."
Emily looked at him. "Did your mother?"
Before he could answer, Mark called from across the room.
"You need to see this."
He had opened another box.
Inside were photographs of Vivian and Miles together over many years.
Not romantic photographs.
Business meetings.
Private dinners.
Bank offices.
One photo showed Vivian signing documents while Miles pointed to the page.
Another showed Miles handing her an envelope.
Then Emily found a picture that made everyone stop.
It had been taken the night David Caldwell died.
Vivian stood outside the hospital.
Miles was beside her.
On the back, someone had written:
SHE CHOSE THE FAMILY NAME OVER THE TRUTH.
Ryan stared at the words.
His phone rang.
It was his mother.
He answered immediately.
Vivian was screaming.
Not in anger.
In fear.
May you like
"Miles is here."
The line went dead.
