The Paper My Husband Never Mentioned

Chapter 03 - The Paper My Husband Never Mentioned

Emily did not scream.

That frightened Ryan more than anger would have.

She simply looked at him and said, "What was I supposed to sign tonight?"

Around them, the wedding guests had begun drifting toward the doors. Some pretended not to listen. Others did not bother pretending.

Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.

"There was a document."

Vivian cut in. "Ryan, don't."

He ignored her.

"My grandfather's trust changes after I marry."

Emily stared at him.

Ryan came from money. She had always known that. The Caldwells owned commercial properties across three states and operated a family foundation Vivian had chaired for more than twenty years.

But Ryan had always insisted the family money was separate from their life together.

"What changes?" Emily asked.

Ryan hesitated.

"Say it."

"I become a voting trustee."

Vivian's face went still.

Emily finally understood why his mother suddenly looked afraid.

Ryan continued. "Once I am legally married, I get access to financial records I couldn't review before. I was supposed to sign the trustee acceptance documents tonight after the reception."

Emily turned toward Vivian.

"So you tried to stop us from signing papers."

"I tried to stop my son from making an irreversible mistake."

"By destroying my wedding?"

Vivian's eyes flashed. "You have known him for two years. I have known him his entire life."

"And that gives you the right to sabotage us?"

Vivian said nothing.

Mark returned the phone after photographing the messages. He explained that the number would be traced if a formal investigation began.

Then Hannah rushed toward Emily with something in her hand.

A folded piece of hotel stationery.

"I found this under the gift table."

Emily opened it.

There was no signature.

Only one sentence.

YOUR HUSBAND KNOWS WHY HIS MOTHER IS AFRAID OF THE AUDIT.

Emily looked at Ryan.

He went pale.

This time, even Vivian looked confused.

"You knew there was an audit?" Emily asked.

Ryan swallowed.

"I knew there were questions."

"What kind of questions?"

He looked at his mother before answering.

"About missing money."

The ballroom seemed to tilt again.

Emily had thought the wedding cake was the disaster.

She was beginning to understand that the cake had only been a distraction.
