The Lawyer Who Never Raised His Voice

Chapter 06 - The Lawyer Who Never Raised His Voice

Everyone turned toward the chair where Miles Bennett had been sitting.

It was empty.

No one had seen him leave.

Mark ran into the hallway.

Ryan followed.

Vivian remained frozen.

Emily had met Miles only three times. He was sixty-one, silver-haired, calm, and almost painfully polite. He had handled the Caldwell family's legal affairs since Ryan was a child.

At the rehearsal dinner, he had toasted "continuity."

Now that word felt sinister.

Celeste explained through tears that Miles had contacted her two weeks before the wedding. He claimed Ryan wanted a private transfer hidden from Vivian.

When Celeste questioned him, he showed her confidential documents about her event company—tax mistakes, unpaid debt, things that could ruin her business.

"He said all I had to do was leave my vendor badge in the service office and go home early."

"Did you touch the cake?" Emily asked.

"No."

"Did Vivian?"

Celeste shook her head. "I don't know."

Vivian looked offended.

Emily did not care.

"What is the key for?"

Celeste pointed to the brass key in Emily's hand.

"A storage locker at the old Caldwell office downtown."

Ryan returned with Mark.

Miles was gone.

His car had already left the hotel.

Vivian sank into a chair.

Ryan stared at his mother. "Why would Miles do this?"

Vivian's eyes filled, but she refused to cry.

"Because your father trusted him."

Emily looked between them.

Ryan's father had died eleven years earlier.

Vivian had rarely spoken about the details.

"He managed everything after David died," she said. "The foundation. The properties. The trusts."

"And you signed what he gave you," Ryan said.

Vivian's silence was answer enough.

Emily slipped the brass key into her purse.

Then her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed the old Caldwell office building.

Beneath it was a message.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOUR HUSBAND'S FATHER REALLY LEFT BEHIND.

Ryan reached for the phone.

Emily pulled it away.

For the first time that night, she wondered whether marrying into the Caldwell family had placed her inside a story that had begun long before she met Ryan.

And someone was desperate to keep the ending buried.
