The Man Who Thought Everyone Had a Price

Chapter 15 - The Man Who Thought Everyone Had a Price
Emily refused to meet Miles alone.
Detective Chen arranged the interview at the police station.
Miles sat behind glass in a gray suit, looking as calm as he had at the rehearsal dinner.
"Mrs. Caldwell," he said.
Emily did not correct him.
"You asked for me."
Miles smiled.
"Because you are the only person in this family who still thinks truth matters more than survival."
Emily stared at him.
"That sounds like something a guilty man would say."
"It sounds like something an experienced man would say."
He offered her a deal.
There were additional documents.
Documents proving exactly how her father had been financially pressured out of the bakery.
Documents that could support a civil claim worth millions.
Miles would reveal where they were.
In exchange, Emily would convince Ryan not to cooperate with prosecutors on certain foundation charges.
She almost laughed.
"You destroyed families for money, and you still think everyone wants what you want."
Miles's expression changed slightly.
"Your father died with debt."
"My father died honest."
"Honesty did not save him."
"No," Emily said. "But it lets me remember him without shame."
For the first time, Miles looked angry.
Emily stood.
"Keep your deal."
As she reached the door, Miles spoke again.
"The documents are in the wedding cake table."
Emily stopped.
He smiled.
"The antique table has a hollow center. Vivian used it for years to move private records between events."
Emily turned slowly.
The cake table had been collected from the hotel that morning.
No one knew where it had gone.
Then her phone rang.
Hannah.
"Emily," she said, breathless. "Someone just came to my apartment asking about the wedding table."
"Who?"
Hannah paused.
"Andrew Pike's wife."
The accountant was in custody.
May you like
But his wife was not.
And suddenly the last missing evidence was moving again.
