What Her Father Refused to Sign

Chapter 11 - What Her Father Refused to Sign

The old man's name was Walter Dean.

He had owned the hardware store for forty-three years.

He remembered Thomas Hart well.

"Your father was stubborn," Walter told Emily. "The good kind."

Two weeks before Thomas died, Miles Bennett came to the bakery with papers.

He wanted Thomas to sign a new valuation for the property.

Thomas refused.

"He said the number was a lie," Walter remembered.

A week later, the bakery's largest commercial account canceled.

Then the bank called in a loan.

Then Thomas suffered a fatal stroke.

Emily had always believed the business collapsed because of grief and medical debt.

Now she wondered whether someone had pushed it.

Ryan listened in silence.

"Did my mother know about this?" he asked.

Walter shrugged. "I saw her once."

Emily turned sharply.

"Vivian?"

Walter nodded.

"She came into the bakery. Your father made her sit in the corner booth. They argued for an hour."

Emily's chest tightened.

Her mother had never mentioned it.

Back at the hotel, Vivian finally admitted the meeting happened.

Thomas Hart had come to her with proof that Miles was manipulating property purchases.

Vivian refused to believe him.

"He told me David already knew," she said.

"And what did you do?" Emily asked.

"I told Miles."

Emily closed her eyes.

There it was.

The decision that connected everything.

Vivian had not stolen the money.

But every time someone brought her the truth, she carried it back to the man they were warning her about.

"Did Miles ruin my father?" Emily asked.

Vivian's voice broke.

"I don't know."

"That is not good enough."

"I know."

For once, Vivian did not defend herself.

Then Detective Laura Chen entered the room.

She had news.

Andrew Pike, the CFO, had been arrested at the airport.

He was carrying a laptop, two passports, and access codes to offshore accounts.

But Miles was still missing.

And according to Andrew, the money had not been stolen for eleven years.

It had been stolen for twenty-three.

Long before Ryan was an adult.

Long before Vivian took over the foundation.

Long before Emily's father lost his bakery.

The first fraudulent account had been opened by someone no one expected.
