The Woman in the Silver Dress

Chapter 02 - The Woman in the Silver Dress

The ballroom changed in an instant.

No one cared about the ruined cake anymore.

Every guest was staring at Vivian.

Ryan stepped away from his mother as if distance itself might make the footage easier to understand. "Who sent that message?"

Vivian locked her phone.

"No one you know."

Emily laughed once, but there was no humor in it. "You were under my cake table, and someone texted you that it worked."

"I said it is not what it looks like."

"Then tell us what it is."

Vivian glanced at the guests and lowered her voice. "Not here."

That answer only made everything worse.

The hotel security officer, Mark Ellis, explained that the collapse did not appear to be an accident. One of the support brackets beneath the antique table had been loosened with a tool. The cake's weight had done the rest.

Emily's best friend, Hannah, covered her mouth.

Ryan looked sick.

The cake had not simply been dessert. Emily's mother, Margaret, had died six years earlier after a short illness. The bakery recipe had been handwritten in blue ink and kept in a plastic sleeve ever since. Emily had spent months finding a pastry chef willing to recreate it exactly.

Vivian knew that.

She had called it "sentimental nonsense" during the planning.

Now the recipe lay somewhere beneath crushed layers of vanilla cake and buttercream.

"Did you do this because you hated the cake?" Emily asked.

Vivian's face hardened. "Do you really think I would risk a criminal charge over frosting?"

"Tonight, I have no idea what you would do."

Ryan finally spoke. "Give me your phone."

Vivian stared at him.

"Mom."

"No."

The word landed harder than a slap.

Mark stepped forward. "Mrs. Caldwell, I am asking you voluntarily. If this becomes a police matter, the phone may be collected as evidence."

Vivian's jaw tightened.

Then she handed it over.

The message had come from an unsaved number.

But there were older messages.

Delete the florist invoice.

Make sure she leaves before midnight.

Ryan cannot sign anything tonight.

Emily read the last line twice.

"What was Ryan supposed to sign?"

Vivian closed her eyes.

May you like

Ryan turned toward his new wife.

And Emily understood from his expression that he already knew.
