The Hollow Table

Chapter 16 - The Hollow Table
The antique cake table was found in a warehouse owned by the event rental company.
Detective Chen obtained a warrant.
Emily, Ryan, and Vivian waited outside while investigators opened the hollow center.
Inside were three flash drives.
Two ledgers.
And a sealed envelope addressed to Ryan.
The handwriting belonged to his father.
Ryan opened it with shaking hands.
David's letter was short.
He wrote that if Ryan ever read it, then he had failed to expose Miles in time.
He apologized for allowing fear to delay him.
He warned Ryan that silence could become a form of participation.
Then came the line that made Ryan cry.
Do not inherit my fear just because you inherit my name.
Emily took his hand.
For the first time since the wedding, she did not hesitate.
The flash drives contained the proof prosecutors needed.
Payments.
Shell companies.
Property schemes.
Threats disguised as contracts.
The records also proved Thomas Hart had been targeted after refusing to sign a false property appraisal.
Emily's father had lost the bakery because Miles pressured the bank and commercial clients connected to Caldwell companies.
Vivian saw the documents.
She sat down and covered her face.
"I brought him your father's name."
Emily knew what she meant.
Years ago, Thomas had trusted Vivian enough to warn her.
Vivian had immediately warned Miles.
That decision had cost Thomas everything.
Emily wanted to hate her.
Some days, she did.
But hate no longer felt like justice.
At the courthouse two weeks later, Vivian testified.
She admitted the cake sabotage.
She admitted helping conceal financial irregularities.
She admitted ignoring warnings because she cared more about scandal than truth.
The reporters filled every bench.
Ryan sat beside Emily.
When Vivian stepped down, she did not look at them.
Then the prosecutor approached Emily.
"There is one more thing."
Miles had accepted a plea agreement.
Andrew had agreed to cooperate.
But the recovery process had uncovered enough assets to repay the foundation and compensate several property owners.
Including the Hart estate.

Emily could reclaim the value of her father's bakery.
But she had to decide what she wanted that legacy to become.
