The Dead Man Was Not a Saint

Chapter 12 - The Dead Man Was Not a Saint

Ryan refused to believe it.

For eleven years, his father had existed in memory as the good man who died too soon.

The honest man.

The careful man.

The victim.

Now a bank signature suggested David Caldwell had opened the first account used in the fraud.

Ryan left the room without speaking.

Emily found him in the empty ballroom.

The ruined cake was gone.

Only a pale stain remained on the floor.

"I built my whole life around not becoming my mother," Ryan said.

Emily sat beside him.

"And now I find out my father may have started all of it."

"You don't know that yet."

"The signature is his."

"A signature is not a whole life."

Ryan looked at her.

"Is that what you're telling yourself about me?"

The question hurt because it was fair.

Emily still had not put her ring back on.

"I am trying to decide whether you kept secrets because you were afraid," she said, "or because you thought I didn't deserve the truth."

Ryan lowered his head.

"I should have told you about the trust. The audit. Everything."

"Yes."

"I thought I was protecting our wedding."

Emily looked around the empty ballroom.

"Everyone in your family keeps using that word."

Protecting.

Vivian protected the family name.

Miles protected the foundation.

Ryan protected the wedding.

Every lie had worn the same costume.

Later that afternoon, Detective Chen called.

The signature was David's.

But the account had been opened under false instructions prepared by Miles.

David discovered the fraud years later.

He had not started it.

He had been used.

Ryan nearly collapsed with relief.

Then the detective gave them the rest.

David had prepared a sworn statement before his death.

It named Miles.

It also named Vivian.

Not as a thief.

As the person who had repeatedly blocked him from going public.

Ryan looked at his mother.

Vivian looked back at him.

And for the first time, Ryan said the words she had feared more than any criminal charge.

"I don't trust you anymore."
