The Warehouse by the River

Chapter 09 - The Warehouse by the River
The abandoned warehouse stood near the Chicago River.
Police surrounded it before midnight.
Claire stayed inside the command vehicle.
She had no intention of playing hero.
Ethan sat beside her.
For twenty minutes, nothing happened.
Then officers entered.
The building was empty.
Vivian wasn't there.
But a chair sat in the center of the room.
On it was another envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Not from Raymond.
From Vivian.
Ethan read it aloud.
"I'm sorry."
Only two words.
Then another sentence.
"Don't give him the ledger."
Claire looked at Michael.
"She escaped."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"How do you know?"
"Because Vivian never apologizes."
His voice cracked.
"Not unless she thinks she's going to die."
Ethan walked away.
Claire followed him outside.
He stood beside the river, fighting tears.
"I spent years wishing she would just leave us alone."
Claire said nothing.
"Now I'd give anything to hear her criticize my tie."
Claire took his hand.
"You'll hear it again."
"You don't know that."
"No."
Claire looked at him.
"But neither do you."
Hours later, a detective discovered something hidden beneath the warehouse chair.
A small key.
It belonged to a safe deposit box.
The box contained Arthur's real ledger.
And a video recorded by Vivian herself.
On the screen, she looked directly into the camera.
"I know you'll hate me for this, Ethan."
Her voice shook.
"But I need you to understand something."
She confessed to creating the false financial credentials in Claire's name.
She confessed to leaking the story to the press.
She confessed to offering Claire money.
But she denied taking the missing three million dollars.
"Raymond did."
Vivian had discovered it two weeks earlier.
She had planned to replace the money by forcing Claire to surrender the building.
Then she could borrow against it before anyone discovered the theft.
Ethan looked devastated.
Vivian continued.
"I convinced myself I was protecting this family."
She swallowed.
"The truth is, I was protecting my pride."
The video ended.
Then Claire noticed a handwritten line inside the ledger.
A list of properties.
One address was circled.
A lakeside cottage in Wisconsin.
Michael stared at it.
"That was Vivian's mother's house."
Ethan looked up.
Claire understood immediately.
"If she had one place left to run..."
May you like
Ethan finished the thought.
"She'd go home."
