Learning How to Be a Family

Chapter 15 - Learning How to Be a Family

Vivian's "Thanksgiving" problem was actually a family problem.

She wanted to host dinner months in advance.

But Ethan had refused.

"I don't want to go back to the penthouse."

Vivian was hurt.

Claire understood both of them.

So she suggested something no one expected.

Thanksgiving would happen at Claire and Ethan's little house.

Vivian could bring one dish.

"No caterers," Claire warned.

Vivian looked offended.

"I can cook."

Ethan nearly choked.

She couldn't.

Her first attempt at mashed potatoes somehow tasted sweet.

Her turkey was nearly raw.

Nora rescued dinner.

Michael came too.

Ethan wasn't ready to call him Uncle Michael.

But he allowed him inside.

That was enough.

Around the crowded table sat people who had lied to one another, hurt one another, and nearly destroyed one another.

There was no magical forgiveness.

There were awkward silences.

Bad jokes.

Old resentment.

But there was also honesty.

After dinner, Vivian helped Claire wash dishes.

"I've been seeing someone," Vivian said.

Claire almost dropped a plate.

"A man?"

"A therapist."

Claire burst out laughing.

Vivian looked annoyed.

"I'm serious."

"I know."

Claire smiled.

"I'm proud of you."

Vivian became quiet.

Perhaps no one had said that to her in years.

She looked down at the plate.

"I told her about the envelope."

"And?"

"She asked why I thought money would make you leave."

Claire waited.

Vivian's eyes became sad.

"Because money always made everyone else leave."

Claire finally understood.

Vivian's father had abandoned the family over debt.

Her brother disappeared into crime.

Her husband escaped into gambling.

Every loss in Vivian's life had worn money's face.

She had spent decades collecting enough wealth to make abandonment impossible.

Instead, she had almost driven everyone away.

Claire dried the plate.

"We're still here."

Vivian looked at her.

"I don't deserve that."

"Maybe not."

Claire smiled gently.

"But that's what grace is."

From the living room came Ethan's laughter.

Vivian listened.

Then she smiled too.

For the first time, Claire thought they might actually become a family.

Then Ethan entered the kitchen holding an envelope.

Claire's stomach tightened instinctively.

"Please tell me your mother didn't bring another one."

Vivian looked horrified.

Ethan laughed.

"No."

May you like

He handed it to Claire.

"This one's from the hospital."
