The Letter We Were Afraid to Open

Chapter 16 - The Letter We Were Afraid to Open
Claire sat down.
Ethan sat beside her.
Several weeks earlier, after months of conversations, they had visited a fertility specialist.
Claire hadn't told Vivian.
She hadn't told Nora.
She barely allowed herself to hope.
Now the results were inside the envelope.
Her hands shook.
Ethan covered them with his.
"We don't have to open it tonight."
Claire looked at him.
"Yes, we do."
She opened the letter.
There was no miracle.
The doctor explained that Claire's chances of carrying another pregnancy were lower than they had hoped.
Not impossible.
But uncertain.
Claire cried quietly.
Ethan held her.
Vivian stood across the kitchen.
The old Vivian would have offered money.
The best doctor.
A private clinic.
Some solution she could purchase.
This Vivian simply asked:
"Would you like me to leave?"
Claire looked up.
"No."
So Vivian stayed.
They sat together at the kitchen table until midnight.
Weeks became months.
Claire and Ethan stopped organizing their lives around what they didn't have.
They traveled.
They worked.
They began volunteering with a local youth arts program housed inside the Cross Building.
There Claire met eleven-year-old Lily Parker.
Lily was sharp, stubborn, and always pretending she needed nobody.
Her mother had died two years earlier.
Her father was in prison.
She lived with an elderly aunt who loved her but was becoming too sick to care for her.
Claire recognized something in Lily.
Not herself.
Vivian.
The fear behind the toughness.
Ethan noticed too.
They became mentors.
Then emergency foster parents.
The first night Lily stayed at their house, she refused the bedroom they prepared.
"I'll sleep on the couch."
"Why?" Claire asked.
"Because this isn't permanent."
Claire's heart broke.
She didn't promise something she couldn't guarantee.
Instead she said:
"Tonight is."
Lily looked at her.
"Tonight, you're safe here."
Months later, Lily's aunt made a painful decision.
She asked Claire and Ethan to consider adoption.
Claire was terrified to hope again.
So was Ethan.
But when they told Lily, the girl stared at them for nearly a minute.
Then she asked the question neither expected.
"What about your real baby?"
Claire knelt in front of her.
"You would be our real child."
Lily began to cry.
May you like
And from the doorway, someone else did too.
Vivian.
