The Apology No One Expected

Chapter 13 - The Apology No One Expected

The press conference was Vivian's idea.

Ethan tried to stop her.

Claire didn't.

Dozens of reporters filled the Cross Building lobby.

Vivian stepped behind the microphone.

She wore a simple black suit.

No diamonds.

No carefully rehearsed smile.

"My name is Vivian Cross."

Cameras flashed.

"Several weeks ago, I publicly accused my daughter-in-law of financial crimes she did not commit."

The room became silent.

"I was wrong."

Claire watched from the back.

Vivian continued.

"I also attempted to manipulate the end of my son's marriage because I believed wealth gave me the right to decide what was best for him."

Ethan lowered his head.

Vivian looked directly toward Claire.

"It did not."

Then she said the words Claire never expected.

"Claire Bennett Cross saved this company."

Vivian paused.

"But more importantly, she tried to save the people inside it."

The video spread online.

Public sympathy shifted almost overnight.

But Claire didn't care about headlines.

After the conference, Vivian approached her privately.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good."

Vivian almost laughed.

Claire continued.

"Because forgiveness isn't a press conference."

"I know."

"It's what happens after."

Vivian nodded.

That was the beginning.

Not of friendship.

Not yet.

Of honesty.

Claire moved back into the penthouse with Ethan.

But only temporarily.

The place no longer felt like home.

Too many decisions had been made there by people pretending money meant safety.

One evening, Ethan found Claire sitting beside the glass coffee table.

The same envelope still rested inside a drawer.

She had kept it.

Not because of the divorce papers.

Because she needed to remember how close she had come to believing someone else's version of her own marriage.

Ethan sat beside her.

"I failed you."

Claire looked at him.

"Yes."

He didn't defend himself.

That mattered.

"I loved you," he said, "but I kept asking you to survive things I should have stopped."

Claire's eyes filled.

"I don't need you to choose me once, Ethan."

"I know."

"I need you to keep choosing me."

He took her hand.

"I will."

Claire wanted to believe him.

Then he placed something on the table.

A small set of house keys.

She looked confused.

Ethan smiled.

"I bought something."

Claire stared at him.

"With what money?"

"That's the best part."

May you like

His smile widened.

"My own."
