The Family We Chose

Chapter 19 - The Family We Chose
Five years passed.
The Cross Building still stood.
Cross Development became profitable again, though it was less glamorous than before.
Ethan never returned as president.
Instead, he started a small construction company specializing in restoring affordable housing.
For the first time in his life, his success belonged entirely to him.
Vivian became the most unlikely volunteer at Lily's youth arts program.
She was terrible with paint.
Excellent at fundraising.
And terrifyingly effective when city officials ignored grant applications.
Michael moved back to Ohio.
He and Vivian spoke once a week.
They were slowly repairing what forty years of shame had broken.
Nora joked that the family had become almost normal.
Claire knew better.
There was no such thing.
There were simply people who decided whether to keep doing the work.
On Lily's sixteenth birthday, the family gathered in the backyard.
Vivian brought a cake she claimed to have baked herself.
No one believed her.
Then Claire felt Ethan touch her shoulder.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
She had been tired lately.
More tired than usual.
She assumed it was work.
Until Nora quietly handed her something.
A pregnancy test.
Claire stared at her.
"No."
"Just take it."
Claire laughed.
Then took it.
Twenty minutes later, she sat on the bathroom floor.
Two lines.
She couldn't breathe.
Ethan found her there.
At first he thought something was wrong.
Then he saw the test.
Neither spoke.
After everything they had lived through, hope felt almost frightening.
Claire whispered:
"I'm pregnant."
Ethan sank to his knees.
He held her.
They cried.
Then someone knocked.
"Mom?"
Lily.
Claire opened the door.
One look at their faces and Lily panicked.
"What's wrong?"
Claire shook her head.
"Nothing."
Ethan smiled.
"Something's right."
When they told her, Lily screamed so loudly Vivian came running.
The entire family ended up crying in the hallway.
Months later, Claire gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
They named him Arthur.
Lily held her little brother first.
Vivian stood beside the hospital bed, staring at the child.
Claire watched her.
"Would you like to hold him?"
Vivian hesitated.
Then extended her arms.
Baby Arthur opened his eyes.
May you like
Vivian began to cry.
This time, she didn't hide it.
