The Page Vivian Didn't Want Me to See

Chapter 02 - The Page Vivian Didn't Want Me to See

Claire looked down again.

Beneath the divorce agreement was another document.

Vivian moved quickly.

"That's enough."

She reached for the envelope.

Claire pulled it away.

For the first time that evening, Vivian lost her composure.

"Claire."

Ethan stepped between them.

"Let her read it."

Claire unfolded the final document.

At first, the legal language meant nothing to her.

Then she saw her own name.

CLAIRE BENNETT CROSS.

And beneath it:

IRREVOCABLE TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP.

Claire looked at Ethan.

"What is this?"

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

"My grandfather changed his trust six months before he died."

Vivian's face hardened.

"Ethan."

"He left controlling ownership of the Cross Building to my wife."

Claire almost laughed.

The idea was absurd.

The Cross Building was a thirty-six-story commercial property in downtown Chicago. It was the foundation of the family's wealth.

"Why would your grandfather leave it to me?"

"Because you were the only person who visited him when he got sick."

Claire remembered those afternoons.

Arthur Cross had been difficult, stubborn, and surprisingly lonely.

While Vivian attended charity galas and Ethan traveled for business, Claire had sat beside Arthur's hospital bed playing gin rummy and listening to stories everyone else had heard too many times.

She had never wanted anything from him.

Vivian pointed toward the paper.

"That document was never properly executed."

Ethan looked at her.

"Yes, it was."

"No."

"It was filed yesterday."

The silence that followed felt different.

Claire finally understood.

The money.

The divorce papers.

The urgency.

Vivian hadn't been trying to save Ethan from a bad marriage.

She had been trying to remove Claire from the family before Claire discovered what she owned.

Claire looked at her mother-in-law.

"You lied to me."

Vivian's expression became cold.

"I protected what belongs to my son."

Ethan's voice broke.

"You mean what you wanted to control."

Vivian turned on him.

"Everything I've done has been for you."

"No."

Ethan looked toward Claire.

"Everything you've done has been to make sure nobody could ever leave you powerless again."

For the first time, Vivian looked frightened.

Claire slowly folded the document.

Then she noticed something else written near the bottom.

A handwritten condition.

If Claire's marriage to Ethan ended under circumstances involving coercion or financial inducement from a Cross family member, an independent trustee would assume control of the entire Cross family trust.

Claire looked up.

"Vivian..."

Her mother-in-law's face went white.

Ethan stared at the document.

"What?"

Claire held up the divorce papers.

"Your mother didn't just try to buy me out."

May you like

She looked directly at Vivian.

"She may have just triggered your grandfather's trap."
