The Grandmother Lily Didn't Ask For

Chapter 17 - The Grandmother Lily Didn't Ask For
Lily didn't trust Vivian.
Claire couldn't blame her.
Vivian arrived at their first meeting carrying three expensive shopping bags.
Lily looked at Claire.
"I thought you said she was trying to change."
Claire tried not to laugh.
Vivian looked confused.
"I brought gifts."
Lily crossed her arms.
"Why?"
"Because I'm..."
Vivian stopped.
Grandmother wasn't official yet.
She placed the bags down.
"Because I didn't know what else to do."
Lily studied her.
Then opened one bag.
Inside was an expensive tablet.
"Can I return this?"
Vivian looked horrified.
"Why?"
"I want a skateboard."
Ethan burst out laughing.
The tablet was returned.
Vivian bought the skateboard.
Then Lily made her ride it.
Vivian fell into a hedge.
It became Claire's favorite family photograph.
The adoption process took nearly a year.
There were background checks.
Home visits.
Legal complications.
Lily's father initially refused to surrender parental rights.
Then he changed his mind.
Not because Claire paid him.
Not because Vivian threatened him.
Because Ethan visited him.
Alone.
He told Lily's father something simple.
"I won't ask you to disappear from her story."
Ethan promised Lily would know where she came from.
Her father cried.
Then signed.
The hearing was scheduled for June.
The night before, Claire couldn't sleep.
She found Vivian sitting on the porch.
"You nervous?" Vivian asked.
"Terrified."
"You'll be a wonderful mother."
Claire looked at her.
"So will you."
Vivian smiled sadly.
"I wasn't."
Claire considered that.
"You made mistakes."
"Large ones."
"Very large."
Vivian laughed.
Claire continued.
"But Ethan still loves you."
"Sometimes children love us despite what we deserve."
Claire shook her head.
"Maybe."
She looked through the window where Ethan and Lily were asleep on the sofa during a movie.
"Or maybe love isn't a prize for getting everything right."
The next morning, they entered the courthouse.
When the judge signed the final order, Lily became Lily Bennett Cross.
Ethan cried openly.
Claire did too.
Vivian tried not to.
Then Lily hugged her.
"Come on, Grandma."
Vivian froze.
One word.

That was all it took.
