The Man We Trusted

Chapter 12 - The Man We Trusted

Ethan couldn't believe it.

Daniel had worked for the family for fifteen years.

He had attended birthdays.

Funerals.

Christmas dinners.

Claire remembered his nervous visit to Nora's house.

Now she understood.

Daniel hadn't given her the flash drive because Arthur asked him to.

He had given it to her because he wanted Vivian blamed.

Federal investigators discovered Daniel had secretly partnered with Raymond.

Michael's criminal history made him the perfect distraction.

Vivian's financial manipulation made her an even better one.

Everyone had secrets.

Daniel had simply learned how to hide behind them.

Claire voluntarily turned over every record she had.

Vivian did the same.

For three days, investigators questioned them.

Then Ethan learned something devastating.

His signature appeared on several fraudulent documents.

"I never signed these."

The investigator didn't accuse him directly.

But Ethan understood.

His reputation could be destroyed even if he was innocent.

Claire examined the documents.

Then she noticed the dates.

"Where were you on March fourteenth?"

Ethan thought.

"Denver."

"April ninth?"

"London."

"June twenty-first?"

He looked at her.

"Our anniversary."

They had been together in Michigan.

Claire smiled.

"You couldn't have signed them in Chicago."

The company maintained travel records.

Hotel receipts.

Flight manifests.

Security footage.

Slowly, the case against Ethan collapsed.

The case against Daniel strengthened.

Two weeks later, Daniel was arrested in Arizona.

He agreed to cooperate.

The full scheme finally emerged.

For years, he had exploited Vivian's secret payments to Michael and buried his own theft inside them.

Raymond discovered the theft later and demanded a share.

Everyone had believed Vivian was the mastermind.

In reality, her lies had simply created the darkness where other criminals could hide.

The charges against Claire were formally dropped.

Ethan was cleared.

Vivian wasn't so lucky.

Creating false credentials in Claire's name was still a crime.

So was filing a false report.

The prosecutor offered Vivian a deal.

No prison.

But she would plead guilty.

She would lose all authority within Cross Development.

And she would be required to publicly admit what she had done.

Vivian stared at the agreement.

Her entire identity had been built around the Cross name.

Claire expected her to fight.

Instead, Vivian picked up the pen.

"Where do I sign?"
