The Healing Touch

Chapter 08 - The Healing Touch
Two hours later, the storm had settled over Blackwood Manor.
Upstairs in the master nursery, the soft glow of a nightlight illuminated the warm room. Ethan lay sleeping peacefully in his mahogany crib, his left arm encased in a tiny blue fiberglass cast, his breathing steady and sweet under the influence of the medicine.
In the adjoining guest bedroom, Lily sat on the edge of a king-sized bed wrapped in a plush cashmere robe. Dr. Vane had treated her bruised ribs and applied medication to her scraped knees, ordering her to rest for at least a week.
The heavy wooden door opened quietly, and Victor walked in.
He had taken off his blood-stained suit jacket and unbuttoned his collar, looking less like a feared mafia boss and more like a exhausted father. In his hands, he carried a silver tray with a cup of warm tea and a small velvet box.
Lily instantly tried to sit up straight. “Mr. Blackwood...”
“Stay down, Lily,” Victor said softly, placing the tray on the nightstand beside her. He pulled an armchair up to the bed and sat down.
“How is Ethan?” Lily asked, her first thought still focused entirely on the boy.
“He’s sleeping soundly,” Victor replied, his dark eyes studying her bruised face. “The doctor said he’ll make a full recovery. Thanks to you.”
Lily looked down at her hands, her heart fluttering nervously under his intense gaze. “I just did what any mother... what anyone would do. I couldn't let her hurt him.”
Victor reached into his pocket and picked up the small velvet box from the tray. He opened it, revealing a stunning platinum necklace set with a rare blue diamond, alongside a set of brass keys.

“This was my mother’s,” Victor said gently. “And those are the keys to the penthouse apartment downtown, registered entirely under your name. Along with a five-million-dollar trust fund I opened for you this afternoon.”
Lily’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Mr. Blackwood, no! I can’t accept this! I’m just his nanny!”
