The Shadow in the Doorway

Chapter 02 - The Shadow in the Doorway

“I don’t need anyone to believe me,” Lily gasped, tears mixing with the dust on her cheek. “Just stop... he’s just a baby... please, Serena!”

Serena laughed—a light, chilling sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. She raised her foot again, aiming straight for Lily’s face to knock her unconscious. “You really don't get it, do you? After I marry Victor, this brat won't even be around to remind him of his dead ex-wife. A little accident today saves me a lot of trouble tomorrow.”

She swung her foot downward.

Clang.

A heavy, terrifying sound shattered the atmosphere. The massive double oak doors at the grand entrance had swung open thirty minutes ahead of schedule.

Standing in the frame was a towering silhouette. Dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, draped in a long black wool coat, stood Victor Blackwood. Behind him were six armed men in dark suits, their faces like stone. But Victor’s face... Victor’s face was a nightmare carved out of solid ice.

His dark eyes took in the entire scene in less than half a second: Lily bleeding on the marble floor, shielding Ethan; the baby’s broken, swollen arm; and Serena, her heel lifted in mid-strike, frozen like a statue.

The air in the foyer instantly dropped ten degrees. The silence was so absolute that the faint, weak whimpers of baby Ethan sounded like thunder.

“Victor...” Serena stammered, her face draining of every drop of color as her heel hit the floor, her voice instantly shifting into a pitch of forced sweetness. “You’re home early! Thank God! This crazy nanny... she dropped Ethan! She tried to hurt him and when I tried to stop her, she attacked me!”
