The Brother Who Ran

Chapter 09 - The Brother Who Ran

Police became involved before sunset.

Marcus claimed the transfer was legitimate.

Foundation attorneys disagreed.

Evelyn sat inside a conference room as investigators questioned employees.

She should have felt victorious.

Instead, she felt sick.

Marcus was her brother.

The man who taught her to ride a bicycle.

The man who stood beside her at Thomas's funeral.

The man she had trusted with everything.

Including the truth.

A young accounting assistant named Sofia Vega asked to speak privately.

“I don't think Mr. Hart ran.”

Evelyn looked up.

“What?”

“I think he's trying to make it look like he did.”

Sofia had worked under Marcus for six years.

She explained that the missing funds had moved through the same network of consulting companies Lily had questioned eleven years earlier.

The companies had different names now.

But the addresses repeated.

Evelyn understood.

Marcus had not suddenly stolen three million dollars.

He had been moving money for years.

Lily had discovered the beginning of it.

The eighty thousand dollars blamed on her had been a cover.

“Why didn't anyone see this?”

Sofia hesitated.

“People saw pieces.”

“And?”

“Mr. Hart was powerful.”

It was an answer Evelyn knew too well.

Power rarely needed to silence everyone.

It only needed to make speaking feel expensive.

Meanwhile, Lily left the hospital.

Evelyn offered to bring her and Noah to the Hart townhouse.

Lily refused.

“We'll go back to Ohio.”

Noah stared at her.

“But Mom—”

“No.”

Evelyn felt panic.

“Please don't disappear again.”

Lily looked at her.

“I'm not disappearing. I'm leaving.”

“What's the difference?”

“This time, you know where I am.”

The answer broke Evelyn's heart.

Noah hugged her before getting into the taxi.

“I like you, Grandma.”

Evelyn held him tightly.

“I like you too.”

He pulled away.

“But Mom says liking someone isn't enough.”

Evelyn glanced at Lily.

“No.”

She whispered.

“It isn't.”

The taxi drove away.

For the second time in her life, Evelyn watched her daughter leave.

But this time, she understood that chasing Lily would not repair the damage.

Lily had spent eleven years being forced into choices.

Now Evelyn had to respect one.

Even if it hurt.

Then Sofia came running from the building.

“Mrs. Hart!”

Evelyn turned.

Sofia held up her phone.

“We found Marcus.”

“Where?”

May you like

Sofia's face was pale.

“He's at your house.”
