The Inheritance Nobody Wanted

Chapter 14 - The Inheritance Nobody Wanted

The story exploded again.

According to old foundation documents, Lily had inherited voting rights after Thomas died.

Rights Marcus had quietly prevented her from receiving by maintaining that her location was unknown.

Now attorneys said Lily could challenge years of board decisions.

Reporters called it a family war.

Lily called it a headache.

“I don't want their money.”

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

“It isn't their money.”

“I don't want yours either.”

“It's not about money.”

“That's what rich people always say when it's about money.”

Evelyn almost argued.

Then laughed.

Lily stared.

“What?”

“Your father used to say exactly that.”

For the first time in years, they laughed together.

It lasted only seconds.

But Noah noticed.

So did Evelyn.

Ultimately, Lily agreed to accept her voting position for one reason.

She wanted to change the foundation.

The organization had spent decades hosting expensive dinners while claiming to help struggling families.

Lily had spent eleven years actually being one of those families.

She knew exactly how humiliating charity could become when donors cared more about photographs than people.

Her first proposal was simple.

Sell the foundation's private event space.

Redirect the money to community programs.

Half the board resisted.

One member asked,

“Where would we hold the annual gala?”

Lily replied,

“Maybe somewhere that doesn't cost more for one night than a family earns in a year.”

Evelyn smiled.

The proposal passed.

Barely.

But afterward, Lily faced another decision.

The foundation offered her a permanent executive position in New York.

It came with money.

Security.

A beautiful apartment.

Everything she had never had.

Noah wanted to stay near Evelyn.

Evelyn wanted them both close.

But she refused to say it.

Because loving Lily now meant allowing her to choose.

Two weeks later, Lily called.

“I made a decision.”

Evelyn held her breath.

“We're moving.”

“To New York?”

“No.”

Evelyn's heart fell.

Then Lily continued.

“Not exactly.”
