The Secret Thomas Took to His Grave

Chapter 06 - The Secret Thomas Took to His Grave

Evelyn did not sleep that night.

At dawn, she sat in the hospital cafeteria with a cup of coffee she never touched.

Thomas had known something.

The thought felt like betrayal.

Yet beneath the anger was another possibility.

Maybe he had tried to help Lily when Evelyn had failed.

After surgery, Lily finally explained.

Thomas found her two years after she disappeared.

Not because she contacted him.

Because he never stopped searching.

He arrived alone at the small diner where she worked in Ohio.

Lily had expected him to demand she return.

Instead, Thomas cried when he saw Noah.

“He held him for almost an hour,” Lily said.

Evelyn turned away.

She could picture it too clearly.

Thomas meeting his grandson.

Without her.

“He begged me to call you.”

“Why didn't you?”

“I asked him whether you still believed I stole the money.”

Evelyn already knew the answer.

“He said you did.”

Lily nodded.

“I couldn't come back just to stand trial in my own family again.”

Thomas respected her decision.

But before leaving, he gave Ben the silver flute.

The same flute Noah had played on the rooftop.

“He said someday music might take Noah somewhere fear couldn't.”

Evelyn covered her face.

Thomas had died without telling her.

But Lily shook her head.

“Don't blame Dad.”

“He kept you from me.”

“No. He gave me a choice. Something nobody else in this family gave me.”

That sentence stayed with Evelyn.

For years she had blamed Lily for leaving.

Now she understood something more painful.

Lily had not simply run away.

She had escaped from people who refused to believe her.

Including her own mother.

Later that afternoon, Evelyn returned home for the first time since the gala.

She entered Thomas's old study.

Nothing had changed.

Books.

Photographs.

His desk.

She opened a drawer.

Inside was a photograph she had never seen.

Thomas was sitting outside a small Ohio diner.

Beside him stood Lily.

And in his arms was a blond toddler.

Noah.

On the back, Thomas had written one sentence.

Someday, Evelyn will need to decide whether being right matters more than getting her daughter back.

Evelyn sat down.

Then she noticed something else.

A date.

The photograph had been taken three weeks before Thomas's death.

Which meant he had seen Lily again.

And if Thomas had found her twice—

someone else might have known where she was too.
