A Different Kind of Home

Chapter 15 - A Different Kind of Home

Lily chose New Jersey.

Close enough for Noah to see Evelyn regularly.

Far enough that Lily could build a life that did not belong to the Hart name.

She rented a small house with a narrow backyard.

Evelyn secretly hated the kitchen.

The cabinets were crooked.

The refrigerator made strange noises.

Lily loved it.

So Evelyn loved it too.

She visited on Sundays.

At first, she brought expensive gifts.

Lily made her take most of them home.

Then Evelyn learned.

She started bringing groceries.

Sometimes nothing.

One afternoon, Noah asked Evelyn to help paint his bedroom.

She arrived wearing designer trousers.

Lily stared at her.

“You know paint doesn't care how much your pants cost.”

Evelyn looked down.

“Thomas used to say that.”

“He probably learned it after painting my room.”

They laughed again.

A year earlier, every memory of Thomas had felt like a wound.

Now some memories were becoming bridges.

Noah chose blue paint.

Of course he did.

While they worked, Evelyn noticed Lily watching from the doorway.

“What?”

Lily shook her head.

“Nothing.”

But that evening, after Noah went to bed, Lily finally spoke.

“I hated you for a long time.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.”

“Sometimes I still do.”

“I know.”

“But sometimes...”

She stopped.

Evelyn waited.

“Sometimes I miss you.”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

She did not reach for Lily.

She had learned to wait.

Lily stepped forward first.

The hug was awkward.

Brief.

Eleven years too late.

And exactly on time.

Then Noah's voice came from upstairs.

“Mom!”

They pulled apart.

“What?”

“There's water coming through the ceiling!”

Lily looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked at Lily.

Then both women began laughing.

The roof was leaking.

May you like

Their reunion lasted forty-three seconds.

It was perfect.
