The Story the Internet Wanted

Chapter 08 - The Story the Internet Wanted

By noon, reporters were outside the hospital.

Lily was furious.

“This is exactly why I stayed away.”

Evelyn called the foundation's communications director.

“Find out who leaked this.”

The answer came quickly.

The leak came from an anonymous board source.

But Evelyn didn't need a name.

Marcus had warned her Lily would destroy the foundation.

Now he was making sure everyone believed it.

Online strangers called Lily a thief.

A fraud.

A woman using her child to manipulate a wealthy family.

Noah read one comment before Evelyn took the phone away.

“Why do they hate Mom?”

“They don't know her.”

“Then why are they saying things?”

Evelyn had no good answer.

That evening, the Hart Foundation board held an emergency meeting by video.

Marcus appeared calm.

Reasonable.

“Until the original financial questions are resolved, we should distance the organization from Lily.”

Evelyn stared at the screen.

Eleven years earlier, she had faced the same choice.

Family.

Or reputation.

Back then, she had chosen reputation.

She would not make the same mistake twice.

“I disagree.”

Marcus leaned back.

“Evelyn—”

“Effective immediately, Marcus Hart is suspended from all financial authority within the foundation pending an independent review.”

Silence.

One board member coughed.

Marcus stared at her.

“You can't do that.”

“I just did.”

“You have no evidence.”

“Maybe not.”

“Then what exactly are you doing?”

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Choosing my daughter.”

The meeting ended badly.

Three board members threatened to resign.

Two major donors postponed commitments.

Marcus left without another word.

Lily heard what happened.

She didn't thank Evelyn.

That hurt more than Evelyn expected.

But Lily simply said,

“You should have done that eleven years ago.”

“I know.”

For once, Evelyn did not defend herself.

That evening, Noah sat beside his mother, polishing the flute with a hospital cloth.

“Grandma?”

Evelyn looked up.

The word still startled her.

“Yes?”

“Are we rich now?”

Lily closed her eyes.

Evelyn almost smiled.

“No.”

Noah frowned.

“But you're rich.”

“I am.”

“So aren't we?”

Evelyn knelt beside him.

“Money doesn't make people family.”

Noah thought about that.

“What does?”

Before Evelyn could answer, Lily spoke from the bed.

“Showing up.”

The words were not forgiveness.

But they were the first door Lily had opened.

Then Evelyn's phone rang.

It was the foundation's bank.

May you like

Marcus had disappeared.

And so had nearly three million dollars.
