The Truth About Thomas

Chapter 11 - The Truth About Thomas
Evelyn sat on the floor of the blue room until morning.
Lily returned to New York the next day.
Not because Evelyn asked.
Because she decided the truth had already damaged too many lives.
They met alone.
Thomas had visited Lily weeks before his death carrying a suitcase.
He told her he planned to separate from Evelyn.
Not because he had stopped loving her.
Because he could no longer live inside the silence surrounding their daughter.
“He blamed me,” Evelyn whispered.
“He blamed himself too.”
Lily explained that Thomas believed Marcus had manipulated the original investigation.
He wanted to confront him.
He wanted Lily to return.
But Lily refused.
“I told Dad that coming home wouldn't fix anything unless you wanted to know the truth.”
Evelyn looked down.
“And he thought I didn't.”
“He didn't know.”
Thomas returned to New York.
Three weeks later, he suffered a fatal heart attack.
The confrontation never happened.
Evelyn had spent six years believing her marriage ended in perfect devotion.
Now she discovered there had been a fracture she never saw.
“I failed both of you.”
Lily's expression softened slightly.
“You made a mistake.”
“For eleven years.”
“Yes.”
“How do I live with that?”
Lily looked through the window.
“You don't make me responsible for forgiving you.”
Evelyn nodded.
It was the hardest thing Lily could have said.
And the fairest.
They sat quietly.
Then Evelyn noticed Lily touching the old silver flute lying between them.
“Why did Dad give that to Ben?”
Lily smiled faintly.
“Because Ben was the only person who could play Dad's song exactly right.”
Evelyn remembered.
Thomas had not actually composed the entire melody.
Ben had helped him finish it years later for Lily's eighteenth birthday.
That meant Marcus had lied about something else.
He once claimed Ben was merely using Lily for access to the family.
But Ben had known Thomas long before dating her.
Their families had been connected through music.
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“Marcus knew Ben.”
“Very well.”
“How well?”
Lily's face changed.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“There is something I never told you.”
Evelyn waited.
“Ben didn't meet Marcus through me.”
“Then how?”
May you like
Lily took a breath.
“Ben worked for him.”
