The Man Behind the Music

Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the Music
Ben Reed had been more than a musician.
During college, he worked part-time doing technical support for Hart Foundation events.
That gave him access to internal systems.
One night, he accidentally discovered Marcus's hidden accounts.
Ben told Lily.
Lily confronted her uncle.
Everything that followed—the missing money, the accusations, the threats—began there.
“Marcus wasn't trying to get rid of me,” Lily said.
“He was trying to get rid of Ben.”
Evelyn felt cold.
“Did Marcus hurt him?”
“No.”
Lily shook her head.
“Ben's death really was an accident.”
For once, the truth was not another conspiracy.
Strangely, that made it sadder.
Ben had escaped Marcus.
Built a modest life.
Raised Noah.
Then died because of an ordinary tragedy.
Not every loss had a villain.
Evelyn needed to learn that too.
Sofia and the independent investigators eventually traced enough of Marcus's network to force a public hearing before the foundation board.
But Evelyn made an unexpected decision.
She refused to make the meeting private.
“This organization raised money in public,” she said. “It can answer questions in public.”
Marcus appeared with attorneys.
Lily sat in the back.
Noah sat beside her, holding the flute.
Reporters filled the room.
Marcus denied everything.
Then Sofia stood.
Her hands trembled.
She had spent six years terrified of him.
Now she told the truth.
Not because Evelyn promised her money.
Not because anyone gave her immunity.
Because she had watched Noah's rooftop video.
“I saw that boy walk into a room full of people with nothing but a flute,” she said. “And I realized I'd spent six years being afraid to walk into one office.”
The room went silent.
Sofia described the fake vendors.
The pressure.
The altered records.
Marcus's face changed.
His attorney whispered for him to remain quiet.
But Marcus had spent his entire life believing he was the smartest person in every room.
He stood.
He began attacking Sofia.
Then Lily.
Then Ben.
Finally, Evelyn.
And in his anger, he said the sentence investigators had been waiting for.
“I did what I had to do because Lily wouldn't stop digging.”
His attorney closed his eyes.
Evelyn stared at her brother.
May you like
Marcus had finally destroyed himself.
With the truth.
