Eleven Years Too Late

Chapter 04 - Eleven Years Too Late
Evelyn stopped beside the hospital bed.
She had imagined this moment thousands of times.
In some versions, Lily ran into her arms.
In others, Evelyn apologized until neither of them could speak.
Reality was quieter.
And crueler.
Lily looked away.
Noah climbed onto the chair beside her.
“I found her, Mom.”
Lily closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“You told me to.”
“I told you to find her if something happened to me.”
“You fainted.”
“I didn't die.”
Noah's face reddened.
“You wouldn't wake up.”
That silenced Lily.
She reached for his hand.
Evelyn saw the tenderness between them and realized Noah had grown up with something she had denied her daughter years earlier.
Trust.
A doctor entered and explained that Lily had suffered complications from an untreated gallbladder infection. Surgery was necessary but routine.
Routine.
Evelyn nearly laughed from relief.
Lily would live.
She had been given something she never believed possible.
Time.
When the doctor left, Evelyn moved closer.
“I thought you were dead.”
Lily's eyes hardened.
“I wrote to you.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“What?”
“For three years.”
“No.”
“I sent letters. Birthday cards. Pictures of Noah.”
“I never received anything.”
Lily studied her mother's face.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if I had known you had a son, I would have crossed the country on my knees to find you.”
The anger in Lily's expression faltered.
Then a voice came from the doorway.
“Don't listen to her.”
Marcus.
Evelyn turned.
Lily went completely still.
Noah slid off his chair and moved behind his mother's bed.
Marcus took one step inside.
Lily's hand began trembling.
“Get him out.”
“Lily—”
“GET HIM OUT.”
Evelyn had never heard her daughter sound like that.
A nurse hurried toward the room.
Marcus raised both hands.
“I'm leaving.”
But before he turned away, Lily pointed at him.
Then she looked at her mother.
“You want to know why I disappeared?”
Evelyn nodded.
May you like
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“Ask your brother what he threatened to do to Noah's father.”
